If you’re lucky enough to visit Rome, make time to visit St. Peter’s Basilica. Don’t worry — even if you’re not Catholic (or religious at all, for that matter), it is most definitely worth the time.We’re not, and we still marvel over the architecture and art.
Pay attention to planning your stop, though, as crowds can be outrageous. There’s magic in St. Peter’s, even for those of us with little to no faith :). I’ve provided just a sample of photos from our most recent visit there, but in the coming weeks, I’ll share with you the purely accidental story of how Barry and I stumbled into having front row seats to witness history: the election of Pope Benedict XVI.

- It’s a treasure trove of hidden wonders. Make sure to bring a guidebook while you visit to get the history behind each religious artifact.

- The detail in each statue is beyond belief.

- The first stone for St. Peter’s Baslica was laid in 1506.

- Suggestion: visit the Vatican Museum first, saving the Sistine Chapel for your last stop. There’s an exit door (it’s supposed to be only for groups) you can take that will lead directly to the church, no lines.
